Oxnard High School held its very first Senior Celebration Day on Thursday 5/23/2019. Seniors started the program with a Senior Walk around campus receiving love and positive vibes from 9th through 11th-grade students, faculty, and staff. Underclassmen prepared signs and posters filled with words of encouragement, sprayed silly string and gave high fives.

The Senior Walk ended in the Big Gym, where they were further honored by performances, activities, and Words of Encouragement from Assistant Superintendent Tom McCoy. Special recognition was given to those who committed to a four-year university; military, community college and trade school. All seniors were provided Paletas (Mexican popsicles) to close the event with a sweet treat, which was provided by the families of the Class of 2019.

Oxnard High School hopes to make this an annual tradition celebrating senior students’ successes. Congratulations Class of 2019!

The Culinary Arts students took their food truck creations to the next level by competing first at the school level and then against teams at the county level. The county competition was held on Saturday, May 18th at VCOE. Juniors, Erick Gomez, Daisy Quiroz, Quinton Ramirez, and Jaylin Williams, with their business Fresh Food on Wheels, advanced onto the finals and presented in front of an audience on Monday night at Rancho Campana. They did not win but won a valuable experience (and a little prize money) and look forward to competing again

Jim Cathcart, Director of Human Resources for Four Seasons at Westlake, kindly provided OHS Culinary Arts students the incredible opportunity to visit the resorts kitchens and learn from a soux chef about creating sauces to pair with vegetables, fish, lamb, and beef. The students were able to taste the food and sauces as a special treat! The pastry chef also demonstrated how she makes an ice cream from real cacao beans and uses CO2 in her creations.

Congratulations to Alex and Claudia for winning $1000 scholarships from the Rotary Club of Oxnard. Great community support for two great OHS students.

Ninety-three AVID Seniors, as well as our AVID tutors were honored on Thursday, May 23rd, at our annual Senior Celebration. Refreshments were provided by our junior AVID students and our underclassmen presented our seniors with handmade candy leis and certificates of achievement. Special thank you went to Albert Santos for taking the senior pictures, our AVID counselor, Ms. Juarez and our senior counselors, Ms. Phillippe and Mr. Cordova. We are looking forward to what the future hold for our seniors!

Twenty-nine eighth graders from Driffill spent Wednesday, May 22nd shadowing classes with AVID students. They experienced a bit of high school life and enjoyed a pizza lunch before returning to their campus. What a great way of showing off the “HIVE”!

OHS is hosting the 3rd Annual Poetry Slam on Thursday, May 30th.  Please congratulate the following students who made the cut.  It was challenging for Ms. Botello and Ms. Brickey to pick 16 contestants out of 33 entries to perform in this year’s Slam.
