Weekly Update

Friday, September 15, 2017

The theme of the opening two weeks has been set the tone early as student assemblies were held for the entire student body Monday!  Approximately 730 first-year energetic Jackets entered the big gym with anticipation of what was to come.  OHS administration set high expectations for our baby Jackets as they spoke of school rules, policies, academic achievement, and expected behavior.  Various members of the OHS staff then reviewed counseling procedures, student activities, keeping the campus clean, appropriate dress attire, and maintaining a positive attitude!  Our sophomores, juniors, and seniors followed throughout the morning!

Cadets from the Air Force Junior ROTC program performed a flag-raising ceremony in remembrance of the victims of the attack on the Pentagon and World Trade Center on 9-11-2001!  Principal Urias spoke about the significance of this day in American history with Superintendent of Schools Dr. DeLeon and Assistant Superintendent Sid Albaugh in attendance.

Campus life is in full force with lots of club activities underway!  A number of OHS organizations are leading a Hurricane Harvey Relief fund with all proceeds going to the Greater Houston Community Foundation.  The OHS Key Club, a service organization that gives back to our community, met Thursday during lunch.  Our newly formed Salsa Club will meet Monday and our OHS Marching Band is looking for students to join the color guard!  CSF held their first meeting of the year Wednesday!

California 2017 Coastal Beach Cleanup Day is Saturday and will be buzzing with approximately 200 Yellow Jacket students!  Our students representing Environmental AP, Marine Bio CP, Science Club, ASB, and more will meet at Silver Strand Beach, by the breakwater, at 8:30 a.m., to pick up trash and beautify the shore!  Thank you OHS Science Teacher Laurel Smith-Michel for coordinating this awesome event!

Shout Outs to those wearing College Gear.  Mr. Keith Koch, Mr. Marcell Brickey, Mrs. Constina Baylor, and Mr. Moreno way to show our students that college is cool!
